10 Days in Argentina & Brazil
Get ready for an unforgettable adventure through Argentina and Brazil! Over 10 incredible days, we’ll experience vibrant cities, breathtaking natural wonders, and charming coastal towns, all while soaking up the rich culture and lively atmosphere of South America.
Our journey begins in Buenos Aires, the cosmopolitan heart of Argentina. We’ll stroll through the colorful streets of La Boca, admire the grand architecture of Recoleta, and experience the passion of a live (and queer!) tango show. Mouth-watering Argentine steak and Malbec wine will be our fuel for the adventure ahead.
A short 1h 45m flight from Buenos Aires takes us to the awe-inspiring Iguazú Falls, one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders. We’ll walk along trails that bring us up close to hundreds of cascading waterfalls, feel the mist on our faces, and take in breathtaking views from the Argentine side on our first day, then the Brazilian side on the following day.
Next, we fly to São Paulo and take a scenic bus ride to Paraty, a charming colonial town on Brazil’s Costa Verde. We’ll wander cobblestone streets lined with pastel-colored buildings, set against the lush Atlantic Rainforest, surrounded by hidden beaches and emerald-green waters.
Our adventure wraps up in Rio de Janeiro, where golden beaches and iconic landmarks await. We’ll take in breathtaking views from the iconic Christ the Redeemer, experience the heritage site of Parque Lage, and of course what would a trip to Rio be without some time spent on the famous sands of Ipanema's gay beach - one of the best gay beaches in the world.
From tango to tropical beaches, and samba to scenic vistas, this trip is the perfect mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation. Ready to explore?
Note, Carnival Departures: February 6 departure spends Thur, Fri, Sat nights, while February 8 departure spends Sat, Sun, Mon nights in the heart of Copacabana during Rio's main Carnival weekend.
Our journey begins in Buenos Aires, the cosmopolitan heart of Argentina. This city blends European elegance with Latin American flair, offering grand architecture, leafy boulevards, and a thriving arts scene. On our first afternoon together, we'll get acquainted while we take you on an epic asado (Argentinean BBQ) journey to learn all about why their cuisine is so well known around the world. You’ll enjoy over 10 dishes of barbecue and seasonal veggie sides, paired with an endless stream of Catena Zapata wines. Come with an empty stomach! And if you're not a meat or wine-lover, don't worry, we'll ensure you're well taken care of.
On our full day in the city together, we’ll explore the colorful streets of La Boca, stroll through the historic San Telmo district, and experience the colonial center of the city, Plaza de Mayo, and its iconic buildings: the Pink House, the Cathedral where a revolutionary hero is buried and the old city hall too.
No visit is complete without tango of course, so this evening will be spent enjoying a private lesson of tango dancing! In this new-generation twist, traditional gender roles are bent to give birth to the queer tango scene. We will learn fluid and changing roles for dancing at a tango studio that specializes in queer tango. And don't worry, we'll have several experts to help us get our footing before heading out to the milonga, the traditional dancehall of tango.
Buenos Aires offers a mix of energy and elegance that’s truly captivating and, if you've got the time, we suggest arriving at least a night early to spend some time sipping a cortado at a historic café or exploring the city's lush parks before meeting the rest of your group on day 1.
We'll wave goodbye to Buenos Aires as we take a 1h 45m flight to the awe-inspiring Iguazú Falls, one of the world's most spectacular natural wonders. Straddling the border between Argentina and Brazil, this breathtaking cascade system is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We’ll walk along the trails of Iguazú National Park, taking in panoramic views from the Argentine side on our first day and Brazilian side on our second day. The Devil’s Throat, the most powerful section of the falls, will leave us in awe with its thunderous roar and immense mist. To soak it all in, we'll even stop at the famous Belmond das Cataratas for a fabulous (included!) lunch far enough from the crowds, but close enough to enjoy the roar and mist.
For an extra thrill, you may want to take a helicopter ride over the falls to get an overview of the spectacular sight, or maybe you'd prefer a boat ride that brings you as up-close to the roaring waters as possible.
This 2-night stop is an unforgettable blend of nature’s raw power and serene beauty.
From Iguazú, we fly 1h 30m to São Paulo and take a scenic 4.5h bus ride to Paraty, a beautifully preserved colonial town along Brazil’s Costa Verde. It's the longer travel day of our adventure together, but we're certain you'll agree that it's absolutely worth the travel to reach this unique and off-the-beaten-track treat.
Founded in the 17th century, Paraty was a key hub in the Portuguese gold trade. Today, it enchants visitors with its cobblestone streets, whitewashed buildings, and vibrant cultural scene. We’ll wander through its historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, admiring its baroque churches, charming plazas, and artisan shops. On our full day, you may wish to take a boat trip to the nearby secluded islands and beaches with emerald-green waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
Paraty is also surrounded by the Atlantic Rainforest, offering hiking trails, waterfalls, and opportunities to spot toucans and monkeys. For adventure seekers, kayaking through the mangroves or visiting a cachaça distillery to taste Brazil’s famous sugarcane spirit adds to the experience. As the sun sets, Paraty’s relaxed nightlife unfolds in charming cafés and live music venues, making it a perfect stop to unwind and connect with Brazil’s coastal charm.
Our adventure continues to one of the most iconic cities in the world, Rio de Janeiro. We’ll stand in awe beneath the towering Christ the Redeemer, enjoy one of the best gay beaches in the world in Ipanema, wander through the gorgeous Parque Lage, and even learn the samba before heading out for a night on the town with our fresh new dancing skills.
Rio pulses with energy, from the rhythmic beats of samba to the lively street markets filled with colorful crafts and delicious street food. Whether we’re sipping a caipirinha at a beachside kiosk, taking in the sunset from Arpoador, or dancing the night away in Lapa’s samba clubs, Rio’s vibrant spirit is the perfect way to end our journey.
Our journey together ends here in Rio and, while you're welcome to say your goodbyes to new friends and depart on this 10th and final day, if you've got extra time, you may want to add a day or two to soak in more of the gay beach, or take part in the many activities the area has to offer.
Arriving early? We invite you to explore the French neighborhoods of Retiro and Recoleta with our local guide on a private 4-hour guided tour of the north area of Buenos Aires - only open to our Detours travelers. Beginning at 10:00am on "day 1", in the hours before your group's official first meeting, you'll visit the world famous Recoleta Cemetery, including the mausoleum of LGBT+ icon Evita Perón and enjoy strolling alongside the manors of Buenos Aires’ gilded age.
This optional pre-tour can be added onto your trip for $55 USD per person. Simply let us know you'd like to add it and we'll be happy to arrange it for you.

The climate in this area between November and March is generally warm to hot, with varying levels of humidity and rainfall.
In Buenos Aires, late spring to summer (November–March) brings warm temperatures ranging from 25–35°C (77–95°F) during the day. The city experiences moderate to high humidity and occasional summer thunderstorms, providing brief but intense rain showers.
Moving north to Iguazú Falls, the climate becomes more tropical. Daily high temperatures range between 28–38°C (82–100°F) with high humidity and some rainfall. The rainforest setting ensures lush greenery and dramatic water flow at the falls, making this a spectacular time to visit.
Along Brazil’s Costa Verde, including Paraty, and up to Rio too, summer brings hot, humid weather with high temperatures between 26–34°C (79–93°F). While this is summer season, short-lived rainfall is common, so we do suggest packing a light rain jacket. In summertime in Rio, expect lively beach scenes, occasional rain, and tropical breezes along the coast.
This area is known for its warm, passionate, and diverse cultures. Argentinians and Brazilians share a love for music, dance, food, and social gatherings, with tango in Buenos Aires and samba in Rio embodying their vibrant spirits.
Buenos Aires is often called the “Paris of South America”, reflecting its rich European influence, while Brazil’s mix of Portuguese, African, and Indigenous heritage creates a unique cultural tapestry. Both countries celebrate art, football, and gastronomy, with lively festivals and welcoming locals.
LGBTQ+ rights are widely recognized, especially in Buenos Aires, a pioneer in equality, and Rio de Janeiro, famous for its Pride celebrations. While urban centers are very LGBTQ+-friendly, attitudes in smaller towns can be more conservative, though tolerance continues to grow across the region.
The cuisine in this region is a feast for the senses, blending bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and rich culinary traditions. In Argentina, we’ll indulge in asado (grilled meats), empanadas, and dulce de leche treats, often paired with a glass of Malbec. Buenos Aires also has a thriving café culture, perfect for enjoying a cortado with medialunas (sweet croissants).
In Brazil, we’ll savor feijoada (a hearty black bean stew), pão de queijo (cheese bread), and the freshest seafood in coastal towns like Paraty. Rio’s vibrant street food scene offers açaí bowls, coxinha (chicken croquettes), and refreshing caipirinhas, Brazil’s national cocktail. From fine dining to lively street markets, the food scene across this region is an adventure in itself.
Packing smart will enhance our experience across different climates and activities. Lightweight, breathable clothing is ideal for warm weather, while a light jacket will come in handy for cooler evenings. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for exploring cities and natural sites. A rain jacket or poncho is useful, especially in Iguazú and coastal areas where showers are common. Sun protection—hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen—is a must for long days outdoors. A power adapter (Argentina and Brazil have different plug types), insect repellent, and a reusable water bottle are also helpful. Swimwear is essential for beaches and waterfalls, and a small daypack makes day trips easier. Most importantly, bring a sense of adventure and curiosity to make the most of this incredible journey!
Don't worry, you don't have to remember all of this! We'll share our suggested packing list as part of our final trip preparation email that we send out 10 days before your trip begins.
Argentina uses the Argentine peso (ARS), while Brazil uses the Brazilian real (BRL). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in cities, but having some cash is useful for small purchases, taxis, and markets. ATMs are available, though withdrawal fees can be high.
In Argentina, inflation continues to make banking complicated and, overall, US Dollars go a long way here, once exchanged. As a result, we suggest arriving to Argentina with 300 USD in cash, and be prepared to exchange it to pesos during your stay.
In Brazil, some businesses accept U.S. dollars, but it’s best to use the local currency. We suggest arriving with approximately 1200 BRL for those items and services that prefer cash payments.
Tipping customs vary slightly between Argentina and Brazil. In Argentina, a 10% tip is customary at restaurants, while rounding up taxi fares and tipping hotel staff a small amount is appreciated. In Brazil, restaurants often include a 10% service charge in the bill, so additional tipping is optional but welcomed for exceptional service. For tour guides and drivers, the equivilent of around 10 USD per day is a good guideline. Hotel staff, such as housekeeping and bellboys, typically receive small tips. While tipping isn’t mandatory, it’s a great way to show appreciation for excellent service throughout the trip.
We have pretty high standards when it comes to choosing our accommodations, and trust us, we’ve done plenty of room-sniffing, pillow-patting, bed-jumping and bathroom inspections to make sure we stay at quality spots. To be approved as a Detours accommodations provider, a hotel/guesthouse must be in an amazing location (close to the beach or other hot spots), AND be gay-owned or gay-friendly.
This trip uses a mix of 4-star and 5-star properties, examples of which can be found on the accommodations tab. Clean, comfortable, well-located spots that'll put a smile on your face, you can count on that!
All Detours trips are led by one of our own Detours trip leaders. They're with you every step of the way, and their job is to help ensure that you have the trip of a lifetime by taking the hassle out of your trip, and enabling you to experience everything you came to Argentina & Brazil for! Consider them like a friendly concierge that's traveling along with you. All of our trip leaders are gay and all are well-traveled and experienced in the destination they're leading in, so they'll be a great part of your experience!
We do absolutely everything possible to avoid needing such a mundane awakening. A world without alarm clocks is one we want to be part of, and your “rise and shine” while in Argentina and Brazil should come from the smell of fresh coffee or the sound of crashing waves. Sometimes it's necessary to have an early departure, based on flight schedules, but we certainly try to avoid it if possible.
Our Detours groups are run with a maximum of 16 travelers. Ages of group members vary but most of our travelers are between 40 and 60 years. Whatever the ages on our trips everyone's already got something in common, an exciting new experience in a couple new countries. Each group is led by a Detours trip leader who is there to ensure everything goes off without a hitch, allowing you to focus on having the time of your life! We welcome both men and women onto our trips although it’s important to know that most groups are 100% gay men.
Traveling solo? Great! Lots of our travelers come solo and our trip will provide plenty of chances to meet great people both inside and outside of our group, including other solo travelers. As far as your accommodations go, you’ve got two choices. We can either pair you up with another solo group member in a room with two beds for no extra charge, or you can have your own room for a reasonable surcharge (the exact cost for this trip is located just under the pricing box).
Argentina uses a "type I", while Brazil uses "type C" and "type N" (usually "N"). These days, the majority of items that are plugged into an outlet are built to handle varying voltage and frequency levels, but just to be sure, we suggest checking your item for its accetable range. Given the different plug shapes required for this trip, we suggest getting a universal plug which has several different available plug shapes in one piece.
What's included? • All taxes • All land and flight transfers within Argentina & Brazil • Accommodations for your 10-day Detours experience • 2 days guided Iguazu Falls sightseeing (from Argentina and Brazil sides) • Queer Tango Class in Buenos Aires & Milonga Outing • 4-hour city tour of Buenos Aires with local guide • Lunch at Belmond das Cataratas • Samba Class & Night Out Experience in Rio de Janeiro • 5-hour city tour of Rio de Janeiro • All full breakfasts • Group travel within Argentina & Brazil • Welcome dinner • Knowledgeable and fun Detours leader •
What isn't included? • Meals and drinks outside of those listed above • Activities outside of the those listed above • International Airfare • Optional gratuities •
Additional spending budget? Your big-ticket items are included through the trip, but you'll want to budget for additional spending such as additional meals, drinks, shopping, activities, etc. These costs can vary dramatically with differing personal habits but we suggest expecting to spend an additional $1100 USD at the lower end for the more budget-conscious and $1500 USD at the higher end for the splurgers. We suggest arriving with approximately 300 USD and 1200 BRL in cash for those items that are more cash-friendly.

The Sept. 2024 Greece trip we took with Detours exceeded all expectations! If you are thinking of a Greek Isle trip, do it! If you are thinking about doing it with Detours, do it! We knew we wanted to do a Greece trip, but a cruise didn't seem a good fit. We found Detours and so glad we did.
We didn't really know what to expect in Greece, but were astounded by the beauty of the place. The day sail around Milos is a highlight. The water is unbelievably beautiful. The Santorini villages are amazing, the gay vibe of Mykonos Town & Elia Beach so fun. The Athens acropolis and Delos tours are much more interesting than expected.
Greece is the star of the show, but Detours did a great job facilitating the tour. No way we could have done it ourselves. Detours takes care of so much of the logistics. All the transfers, dinner spots, ferries, the hotels, etc. The pool at the Milos hotel was a favorite.
Darren the trip leader was fun, engaging, and knowledgeable. He made everyone feel included, always there for questions & help. He was awesome.
