Meet Our Team: Miles!

Travel has always been a big part of my life. At 18 years old I embarked on a solo working holiday to New Zealand that changed my life. Over the following 10 years my travels took me to all corners of the world including Mt Everest base camp in Nepal, the salt cathedrals in Colombia, and the stunning ruins of Angkor Wat in Cambodia. Several of these years were spent as a trip leader in South East Asia where I was able to witness first-hand the life-enriching effects of truly experiencing another country and culture.

My travels and trip leading experience has taught me that the best way to broaden horizons, open minds, and ensure a fulfilling journey is to get out from behind the glass of a bus and the walls of a hotel and immerse ourselves into the culture and landscape of the places we visit.

In 2012 Detours was founded on these principals and passions. Instead of constructing restricting itineraries that attempt to suit a group of people with different interests and personalities, Detours trips allow the travel experience to form naturally with no pressure. I love to be completely engaged with our groups to ensure the travel experience they receive is authentic, enriching, and tailored to each person's interests. It's a unique concept, and one that has been received with overwhelming positive feedback from our travelers, including multiple repeat travelers. 

My favorite part of trip leading, and something that still never ceases to amaze me, is watching a group of complete strangers come together from so many backgrounds and with so many different personalities, and leave as such close friends after only a matter of days together.  There's something to be said about being in a new place and experiencing new adventures that really brings people together like nothing else, it's quite fascinating and a LOT of fun!

In the end, my job isn't done until my group members are having the time of their lives and return home raving about the incredible experiences they were a part of in the world's most exotic locations.
