European River Cruise

NOVEMBER 23, 2024 to DECEMBER 1, 2024

A totally unique Detours trip!  9 all-inclusive days together on the enchanting Rhine River, starting in Rotterdam/Amsterdam, ending in Cologne, Germany, with holiday cheer, pride festivities, and endless opportunities for fun and adventure along the way.  All your incredible meals along the way - they're all included.  All your drinks (alcohol and non-alcohol) - included too.  Bear Pride in Cologne and Christmas markets galore - yep, included.  Your airport transfers from Amsterdam, impressive on-board entertainment, shore excursions in unique ports, and a modern lux ship with a gym, a pool, a spa, and some of the largest staterooms on the rivers of Europe - all included.  Oh, and this is an exclusive invite-only sailing just for our cherished Detours travelers and your lucky friends/referrals!

So, whether you're a scene-ry-queen, a history buff, or simply a lover of all things merry and bright, you'll find a boatload of ways to kick back, chill out, or amp up the fun on this voyage together! The hardest part will be choosing what to do next. And fear not, our Cruise Manager and multiple trusty Detours leaders will be there to make sure it's all smooth sailing. So, grab your friends and let's make this one for the (photo)books!

DAY 1 - ROTTERDAM / EMBARK

As you step onto our luxurious vessel (from your included transfer from Amsterdam airport or hotel) you'll be met with a drink and a warm smile, marking the beginning of our extraordinary journey together. Between our very own Detours leaders and our handpicked gay & gay-friendly crew onboard (there are 60 of them!), you can be sure every detail of your experience has been carefully curated, from the incredible food & beverage menu, to the live entertainment, immersive excursions, and everything in between!

As you settle into your spacious and elegantly appointed cabin, you'll immediately relax knowing that this will be your home away from home for the duration of our voyage. Your wardrobe neatly stowed away, your personal items arranged just so—every detail thoughtfully considered to ensure your comfort and convenience. And unlike any other Detours adventure, you only have to unpack ONCE!

Rotterdam is renowned for its dynamic character, innovative architecture, bustling port, and vibrant cultural scene. Among which you'll find quite a vibrant gay nightlife that's popular among locals.

Our adventure will officially begin at 4pm onboard with a welcome reception, however you're welcome to embark any time after 12pm (lunch onboard is included).  Your transfer from Amsterdam is included whether you arrive on this day, or whether you've added on our 2-night pre-trip Amsterdam extension (more on this below).

DAY 2 - LET THE CRUISING BEGIN (Rotterdam to Bonn)

After a free morning to explore Rotterdam, we'll bid farewell to this dynamic city and set sail towards the heart of Europe.

Snuggle up with a warm cocoa (or something stronger for extra warmth, perhaps?!) and a cozy blanket as you kick back on the sundeck and watch as the charming riverside towns, windmills, and traditional Dutch farmhouses pass us by, each offering a glimpse into rural life in the Netherlands.

If the winter chill isn't your cup of cocoa, fear not! Our onboard oasis is packed with amenities and games to keep the fun rolling. Dive into a game of cards with newfound friends, join in on a spirited trivia contest, or simply relax in one of the lounges with a good book or a refreshing drink. Whether you're seeking adventure, a moment of relaxation, or maybe even a gym session, this ship has you covered. So, kick back, mingle, and let the good times roll as we cruise the Rhine in style!

Under the Accommodations tab you'll find a ton of information about our ship, the 'Advance', as well as a description and photos of the cabins.

THEME NIGHT - "White Christmas" - Come to dinner wearing as much snow white as you can.

DAY 3 - BONN & KÖNIGSWINTER

Welcome to Germany! Overnight we've sailed to the delightful town of Bonn, where history and holiday cheer blend seamlessly! Germany is renowned for its enchanting Christmas markets, and our first stop in Bonn is no exception. Step ashore and wander through the charming stalls of the Bonn Christmas Market (Bonn Weihnachtsmarkt), where the air is filled with the scent of spiced mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, and freshly baked gingerbread. Admire handcrafted ornaments, festive decorations, and traditional handicrafts, and indulge in seasonal treats as you soak in the festive ambiance.

No visit to Bonn is complete without paying homage to its most famous son, Ludwig van Beethoven. Explore Beethoven's House (Beethoven-Haus), beautifully adorned for the holidays, and immerse yourself in the musical legacy of the legendary composer.

Looking for a change of pace and to soak up the beauty of the Rhine like never before? Why not grab a bike (there's plenty included and on board) and cycle along the riverfront from Bonn to Königswinter? It's the perfect remedy for those travelers looking to inject a dose of adrenaline into their day. As you cycle, each turn unveils breathtaking vistas of vineyards, castles, and charming villages nestled along the riverbanks. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or a novice rider, this experience promises stunning views and is a memorable activity you can brag to your friends at home about.

For an enchanting detour (see what we did there!?) from Bonn or Königswinter, hop aboard the cogwheel train and ascend to the majestic Drachenfels Castle offering panoramic views of the Rhine Valley below. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply seeking adventure, Drachenfels Castle promises an unforgettable experience that will really leave you breathless (especially if you decide to walk up instead of take the train!)

DAY 4 - COCHEM

Rise and shine, adventurers! It's time to fuel up with a hearty buffet breakfast and a strong cappucino, because we have a whole new place to explore! Overnight we've sailed from Königswinter to the charming town of Cochem, nestled in the heart of the Moselle Valley!

Here you'll have a full day to explore this stunning region, with the quaint and picturesque town of Cochem at the center. You can lace up your hiking boots or slip into your cycling gear for a day of exploring vineyard-draped hillsides and quaint villages nestled along the Moselle River. Or if that's not your thing, you can make your way to the majestic Reichsburg Castle, which can be accessed on foot from our ship.

Whether you're sipping world-class wines, capturing Instagram-worthy vistas, or simply wandering the streets of this quaint town, Cochem and the Moselle Valley promise a day filled with wonder and adventure. So, grab your sense of curiosity and let's make today another unforgettable chapter in our grand adventure!

THEME NIGHT - "Santas and Elves" - Come to dinner as the big man himself, one of his elves, or any Christmassy attire.

DAY 5 - KOBLENZ (AM) / RÜDESHEIM (PM)

Where the Rhine and Moselle converge lies one of Germany's oldest and most beautiful cities: Koblenz. Vineyards, forests and four mountain ranges create the unique backdrop to this 2,000-year-old city. Kick off your exploration by wandering through the charming streets of Koblenz's Old Town, where you'll find medieval architecture and lively cafes around every corner. Don't miss the iconic Deutsches Eck, or German Corner, where the Rhine and Moselle rivers meet, offering panoramic views and the perfect photo opportunity.

This afternoon... get ready for a journey through postcard-perfect landscapes as we set sail from Koblenz to Rüdesheim soaking in the beauty of the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley. A highlight not to be missed is 'Castle Alley'—a stretch of the river adorned with majestic castles and ruins perched atop towering cliffs. As we glide past these ancient fortresses, each with its own story to tell, you'll feel like you've stepped back in time.

Along the way, there's Lorelei—a place steeped in myth and mystery. Legend has it that a siren named Lorelei once lured sailors to their doom with her mesmerizing song, causing ships to crash upon the treacherous rocks below. Today, the Lorelei Rock still casts its spell over travelers, offering panoramic views of the Rhine Valley that are nothing short of breathtaking. So, whether you're marveling at the ancient castles of Castle Alley or contemplating the myths of Lorelei, these iconic landmarks are sure to be the highlight of our journey along the Rhine today.

Once in Rüdesheim, you'll want to take a stroll through this picturesque town, adorned with colorful decorations and festive displays as Rüdesheim's holiday market comes to life. And of course, no visit to Rüdesheim would be complete without raising a glass of glühwein or feuerzangenbowle—a festive concoction of mulled wine and flaming sugar—to toast to the magic of the season. It's the perfect way to end a day of adventure.

DAY 6 - MANNHEIM / HEIDELBERG

Happy Thanksgiving! Today you can step back in time and immerse yourself in the medieval splendor of Heidelberg, approx 30 mins drive from our ship that will be docked in Mannheim.

Our first stop: the magnificent Heidelberg Castle, a towering fortress that has stood watch over the city for centuries. Explore its grand halls, winding staircases, and picturesque courtyards as you uncover the stories of its past. Don't forget to take in the breathtaking views of the city and the Neckar River from the castle's terrace—the perfect backdrop for a memorable photo!

After our castle adventure, it's time to tantalize our taste buds with some traditional German delicacies. Indulge in savory bratwurst, crispy schnitzel, or hearty käsespätzle at a cozy tavern or beer garden, accompanied by a refreshing pint of local beer or a crisp glass of Riesling. And of course, no visit to Heidelberg would be complete without sampling the city's famous sweet treat: the beloved Studentenkuss, a decadent chocolate confection that's been delighting locals and visitors alike for generations.

And Thanksgiving wouldn't be complete without us thanking you, our most loyal travelers and friends, without whom we wouldn't be here together today. Your support, enthusiasm, and adventurous spirit have made the past 12 years truly unforgettable. So here's to you, our cherished travelers, and to the magic of Heidelberg on this Thanksgiving day.

DAY 7 - MAINZ

Overnight we've slept soundly with our hearts (& bellies) full from Thanksgiving, and sailed from Mannheim to Mainz, where we have another full day to explore (gotta get those steps in and work off that turkey, right?!)

Here you can discover Mainz's rich history at the Gutenberg Museum, and marvel at ancient manuscripts, printing presses, and artifacts that celebrate the life and legacy of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press. It's a must-visit for book lovers, history buffs, and anyone fascinated by the power of the written word.

Afterward, wander through Mainz's picturesque Old Town with its medieval architecture, vibrant market squares, and cozy cafes where you can sample Mainz's famous specialty: hand-twisted pretzels that are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and totally irresistible!

Still need a few stocking stuffers to take home with you? Grab that nice (or naughty, we don't judge!) list and head to the Mainz Christmas Market, where artisans and vendors offer a selection of handmade crafts, traditional gifts, and seasonal treats. From intricately carved ornaments to mouthwatering gingerbread cookies, there's something for everyone! And be sure to keep an eye out for the iconic Mainz Christmas Pyramid—a towering wooden structure adorned with festive decorations and figurines.

THEME NIGHT - "80s extravaganza" - Think Madonna and Cher, leg warmers, and your favorite tight-and-brights

DAY 8 - COLOGNE

Overnight we've sailed from Mainz to Cologne, and as we emerge from our cozy dens onboard, it's time to unleash our inner bear and join in this celebration of love, acceptance, and community, because we've officially arrived in Cologne just in time for the final weekend of Bear Pride Week!

Whether you're a proud bear, a fierce ally, or somewhere in between, Bear Pride Week welcomes everyone with open arms and a whole lot of love. Here you'll find something for every member of our diverse LGBTQ+ family to enjoy. Bear Pride Week isn't just about celebrating bears—it's about celebrating YOU! It's about coming together as a community, embracing our differences, and reveling in the joy of being exactly who we are.

Whether you're hitting the dance floor, exploring the city, or simply soaking in the vibrant atmosphere, we know you'll have a bear-y good time in Cologne! (Ha! Sorry, couldn't resist!) We'll be docked overnight, so you can stay on land as long as you like tonight, though of course we'll have our farewell dinner and closing party onboard too!

DAY 9 - COLOGNE / FRANKFURT

Well, well, well, look at us! We've officially popped our cruise cherry together, and boy, was it a memorable ride! From our first glimpse of the sparkling Rhine to our last night of dancing under the stars (through the glass roof!), we've sailed through uncharted waters and emerged as seasoned sailors (or at least, excellent deck dancers).

United by our love of travel, our sense of adventure, and our shared belief in living life to the fullest, this really is one adventure we wont forget. Whether we're bears, otters, or unicorns, this is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate their inner sparkle and come together to share in this once-in-a-lifetime experience! So here's to the Rhine, to Germany, to the Netherlands, and to each and every one of you!  Auf Wiedersehen and tot ziens—until our next adventure together!

On the last day, your included departure transfer can either take you to Cologne-Bonn airport (code CGN) OR to Cologne's main train station for convenient (and quite fast) access to many other European cities/airports, such as Frankfurt (1 hour), Brussels (2 hours), Paris (3.5 hours), or Amsterdam (3.5 hours).  Heading home right away?  We suggest booking your flight from Frankfurt (code FRA) with a departure time after 10am given the large number of flights available from FRA airport.

OPTIONAL PRE-TRIP EXTENSION

Arriving early?  Amsterdam is one of our favorite places in the world and whether you've already experienced this city before or not, it's absolutely worth at least a couple of nights of exploring.  This self-guided 2-night extension can be added on to your Detours river cruise experience by request and includes:

  • 2 nights at Clayton Hotel Amsterdam American, a 4-star hotel right in the center of the city.

  • 3-hour guided city walking tour on Nov 22nd (private to Detours travelers).

Add this package for $640 USD per person based on two people sharing one room, or $890 USD per person in a private solo room.

Amsterdam has several incredible museums that are very much worth checking out.  We haven't included these as personal preference will determine which you may like to visit.  Our top three favorites include the Anne Frank House, the Rijksmuseum, and the Van Gogh Museum.

THE CLIMATE

This is a trip where you'll want to bring some warm clothing, and a waterproof/snow-friendly jacket, given the season and time of year that we'll be traveling through Europe. Of course, any holiday-themed clothing is welcome too! Especially as you wander through the holiday markets!

Generally, we're expecting to see temperatures in the mid-40s to low-50s (7-10'c) throughout the trip.

LGBTQ FRIENDLINESS

ROTTERDAM
"Gay friendly" in Rotterdam doesn't just mean a neighbourhood; the city is welcoming as a whole. This is not just an edgy place famous for its huge port and progressive architecture, it is also known for its laid back locals and party scene.

ONBOARD
Transcend is proud to hire gay and gay-friendly staff, and we've handpicked quite the extraordinary team to host our trip! You'll be in good hands, and made to feel extremely welcome from everyone on board including the tall handsome Captain Rudy, the delightful and personable housekeeping staff, and the charismatic reception and serving staff! There's up to 60 staff members on board to ensure every part of your onboard experience is exceptional.

COLOGNE
Our journey will of course finish up in Cologne during Bear Pride Week, but even without those festivities going on, this is a city (and country) that's very very comfortable (and welcoming) of everyone. Collectively, we at Detours have traveled to every corner of the globe and would all agree Germany is certainly at the top of the list in terms of embracing every personality and sexuality under the sun! This is your place to let loose, be yourself, and embrace being in a part of the world that accepts you for who you are!

WHAT TO BRING

Being that you'll have ample closet space to unpack, it's really up to you this time what you'd like to bring. With private round-trip transfers, and no unpacking through the trip, you can pack the kitchen sink if it'll fit within your airline's luggage allowance!

The ship is quite high-end but we also want to ensure everyone is comfortable so don't worry about dressing up too fancy.  Comfortable casual wear is most appropriate during the day, especially for excursions off ship, then a pants and a collared shirt (maybe a polo or button-up) will be great for the evenings.

We'll have 3 optional but encouraged themed nights onboard and we'd encourage you to pack for the following:
 - "Santas or Elves" - Dress up as Santa, an elf , or any other Christmas attire
 - "White Night" (celebrating all the snow outside, hopefully!) - Dress in all white
 - "Neon Nights: An 80s Extravaganza" - Dress in neon and/or all your best 80s clothing!

YOUR GROUP

Overall, we've found that approximately 60% of the travelers on trips join solo, while the other 40% or so join with their partner or a friend, and 90% of our travelers are in their 40's, 50's, and 60's. Whatever the age of the guys on our trips everyone's already got something in common, an exciting new experience in a new part of the world to share together!  Each group is led by one or more Detours trip leaders who are there to ensure everything goes off without a hitch, allowing you to focus on having the time of your life! We welcome both men and women onto our trips although it’s important to know that almost all groups are 100% gay men.

Due to the size of this ship (55 staterooms) it's important to note that while there will of course be plenty of opportunities to explore at your own pace and find some serenity on board, there will also be the opportunity to meet plenty of other people to share the adventure (and evening cocktails and entertainment) with!

MONEY

Credit cards are commonly used in this part of the world, and Visa & Mastercard are accepted everyehere, (AMEX less so but still can be used at many places). Even at the holiday markets credit cards are accepted.

The official currency in the Netherlands and Germany is the Euro (EUR).

If possible, it's always a good idea to travel internationally with a credit card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees.  The savings will add up over the course of your trip and may end up being worth the work of getting a new card prior to your trip.

Once you're overseas, if presented with the option to pay in the local currency or your home currency, we suggest always choosing the local currency to further avoid fees.

SOLO TRAVELERS

Want to join solo? No problem! Lots of our travelers come solo and our trip will provide plenty of chances to meet great people both inside and outside of our group, including other solo travelers. As far as your accommodations go, you’ve got two choices. We can either pair you up with another solo group member in a two-bed stateroom for no extra charge, or you can have your own room for a reasonable surcharge as noted under the pricing on the main trip page.

TIPPING

Gratuities for all of the roughly 60 staff on board is included in your trip price ($15 USD per day per person). Some travelers like to leave 'a bit extra' for any of the staff on board that may have gone above & beyond but it's not expected.

STAYING CONNECTED

Of course, we're big advocates of 'disconnect to reconnect' in this fast-paced modern world we live in, but it's also nice to stay connected to the group with live updates, share in your adventure, and so to do this - your cell phone provider likely has several roaming options available.  We suggest reaching out to them prior to the trip to find out which package is right for you as it will depend on how much you intend to use your phone while traveling.  Keep in mind that there's free WiFi available onboard, so it would mostly just be for the time spent off the ship exploring the towns and cities as we go. There are also great eSIMs that are available for the newer model cellphones, and these are very affordable data-only options for traveling abroad.

ALARM CLOCKS

We've got NO scheduled early mornings on this trip, which will be music to the ears of the night owls!  A world without alarm clocks is one we want to be part of, and your “rise and shine” while in Europe should come from the sound of church bells in the distance!

You'll be able to have breakfast at leisure, and begin any of the day outings at reasonable times but if you're an early riser there is an espresso machine in your room (with great coffee!) or plenty of options at the 24-hour self-serve station by reception.

ELECTRICAL OUTLETS

The European plug, known as a "type C" and "type F" plug, is what you'll find everywhere on this trip. The voltage is 230V with 50 Hz frequency. These days, the majority of items that are plugged into an outlet are built to handle varying voltage and frequency levels, but just to be sure, we suggest checking your item for its acceptable range.

There's also a USB port on your stateroom's bedside table/headboard for convenient charging too!

What's included? • Full board • Free-flow beverages (Coffee, tea, bottled water, soft drinks, beer, wine, and spirits (house brand) • Welcome & farewell cocktail receptions • Detours trip leaders (1 per 16 guests) plus up to 60 ship crew members • Unlimited Wi-Fi • Complimentary use of bicycles and Nordic walking sticks • Shipboard staff gratuities ($15 per person, per night) • Onboard entertainment - Pianist/vocalist, pre-dinner, and afternoon sailings/DJ (nightly, post-dinner)/Regional drag performer (1 show)/Cabaret/showtunes (1 show) • Multiple shore excursions including transport • 2 Onboard cooking classes (regional/seasonal dishes) • 1 Mixology class (regional/seasonal cocktails) • Roundtrip airport transfers (arrival Amsterdam, departure Cologne) • Snacks and coffee served throughout the day at The Bistro • Fitness and wellness programs including the countercurrent pool, fitness center, daily Yoga/Stretching class led by the onboard wellness coach • Self-serve laundry facilities.

What isn't included? • Port charges of 199 USD per person • Optional 'top shelf' drink package (must be added at time of boarding) • Optional Spa/Massage treatments onboard • Laundry pressing service onboard (self-service laundry is complimentary) • International airfare to/from start/end of trip • Activities outside of the those listed above

Additional spending budget?  During our excursions ashore, you might want to bring some spending money for shopping, food & beverages, depending how much you like to sample local cuisine, or how big your nice/naughty list is that you need to shop for!

Trip Reviews

Travelled with Detours to Egypt in March. We experienced no safety concerns over there and the whole vacation experience was first class. This was in no small measure due to group leader Darren and local guide Hend, who both had an incredible knowledge of the places we visited. To encounter pyramids and temples built thousands of years ago, and understand the civilizations history, is a mesmerizing experience which becomes etched into your mind. Highly recommended.

March 18, 2024

I have just returned from one of the most exhilarating, memorable, laughter-filled, and adventure-driven holidays imaginable - and this, my second holiday with Detours Travel, did not disappoint at all. Never in a lifetime have I even thought about going on a trip to Thailand and Cambodia but thanks to Detours and their dedicated and professional team that crafted the ideal holiday for me, it finally became a reality. I couldn't think of a more fitting tour leader in Oliver Armstrong. He was the fulcrum who held all of us together, the starship that catapulted us to experience adventure, and the source for ensuring that our memorable experiences are never extinguished in our thoughts.

I've read (and heard) so much about the rich history - ancient and modern - of these two destinations and it definitely did not disappoint when I finally arrived. I have crossed off so many items from my bucket list as a result of this holiday; visiting the historic Angkor Wat complex and just marveling at the grandeur of it all (that photos cannot do justice), savoring the different and diverse culinary delights of the region, walking through the streets of Bangkok and Phuket and taking in first hand their notorious but equally exciting reputation, and for the first time I have finally faced my fears and conquered zip lining as well as give snorkeling a try.

But above all, the most memorable and most endearing experience I had with this recent holiday, as well as the previous holidays I have booked with Detours, is meeting the outstanding group of men that I am so fortunate to have spent two weeks with and the friendship that were forged as a result of this, all of whom share the same interests as me, have parallel life experiences as what I've been through, and come from a diverse and rich pedigree that they are eager to share and I am so welcome to bring into my life.

Bravo, Detours Travel! I look forward to joining you again this year in Japan and Australia. And for these upcoming trips, although I'm over the moon with excitement to experience these destinations for the first time, I look forward to meeting some of my fellow Detours travelers from our previous adventures - and have the opportunity to once again give them all a well-deserved and endearing hug when we meet, something that will definitely surpass any fatigue after a long-haul flight and will make the journey very well worth it.
